Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena opens up about the disappointing 2023/2024 season amid his imminent exit from the club.
As the clubs in the Dstv Premiership begin their preparations for the 2024/2025 season, one of the leading coaches, Rulani Mokwena, is nearing an exit from the league’s defending champions.

The 37-year-old tactician is said to have left his post after a breakdown with the club’s Sporting Director Flemming Berg to let Dane continue his project at the club.
Berg is said to be in charge of the club’s football matters from signing, outgoings, and what the direction should the club take going forward.
However, after a disappointing season, which saw the club win the league and African Football League, Mokwena seems to have not met the tasks set by the club under Berg, which left a tension between the duo.

In the latest Magezine edition of the club, the former Orlando Pirates coach has given his perspective on the 2023/2024 season.
“Ending the season with only one trophy trophy was extremely disappointing, but I think the new four-year contract from the club was a demonstration of their trust and belief in my abilities to lead the team. That already gave me a big responsibility that we had to do better than the season before. So, when this season began, the unwritten objectives and targets as per football club was to win every single match and title,” Mokwena stated on the club’s magazine.
However, Mokwena was left disappointed in the club coming close on many occasions to lifting the trophies this past season and also how close they came to winning the league invisibly so(undefeated all season).
“There is, however, a deep sense of disappointment in my heart because we got so close achieving invincibles status and needed just one more game to get it right. We came so close in the MTN8 but lost in penalties. We got equally close in the Nedbank Cup and lost. I see these as marginal losses, but they are part of our progress. But bringing home two of the most important trophies can be marketed as a success, but a success we know we can exceed. We understand that although it’s good, it’s not good enough for our club,” he concluded.
Mokwena is set to leave the club alongside his assistant, Michael Loftman, and performance analyst Dayle Solomon, who have also not returned for pre-season alongside the coach.

Meanwhile, the 37-year-old is not short of suitors despite leaving the Chloorkop-based club less than 24 hours ago, as Moroccan giants AS FAR Rabat(who recently lost their head coach Nasreddine Nabi to Kaizer Chiefs) and Wydad Casablanca are said to be set to battle to land Mokwena.
The two are yet to make contact with Mokwena’s agency, but they are interested in bringing him to Morocco.
