Yanga superstar Stephanie Aziz Ki called Vilakazi’s tricks ‘nonsense’ while the South African football fraternity is divided over his style of player.
However, one of the club’s legends, who is also known for the flamboyant style of play, Jabu Mahlangu, came to the defence of the youngster and also encouraged him to continue with it.
“If we are speaking about Mfundo Vilakazi, I think he is Kaizer Chiefs material. He is brave for him to do that in front of that crowd,” Mahlangu said on his podcast Jabu Mahlangu and Diski Shandis.
“That’s character of Kaizer Chiefs players, from generation to generation, who have this character. From Teenage Dladla, to Ace Ntsoeleng, to Doctor Khumalo, to Tsiki Tsiki(Thabo Mooki) to Jabu Pule to Stanton Fredericks.
“Our skills these kids’ skills will not be the same. People need to understand that. The skills of Ace Ntsoeleng and Jomo Sono – you remember how they used to do it? They would stand on the ball and things, but they were still good. These are skillful people.
“And the talents from generation to generation are different. These kids these days are doing different skills.
“So, coming back to this Mfundo thing, my message to him is to continue doing it. When he does that, I haven’t seen him lose the ball cheaply. He does his knee thing and whips in a cross.”
Meanwhile, the 19-year-old is expected to play a big role in the first team this season under the new head coach Nasreddine Nabi.
