Rulani Mokwena reveals that he defeated ex-Real Madrid head coach to over as Wydad Athletic Club’s head coach.
The 37-year-old parted ways with Mamelodi Sundowns after having a fallout with the club’s hierarchy led by Sporting Director Flemming Berg over transfers and poor returns in CAF Champions League.

A week after parting ways with the Brazilians, Mokwena joined African and Morrocan giants, Wydad, on a three-year deal with an option to extend the deal for a further season.
The former Orlando Pirates head coach shared that he was not the only man in the running for the post despite landing it upon him becoming available.
He revealed to Metro FM show Sports Night Amplified With Andile(SNAWA), that former Real Madrid and Liverpool veteran coach Rafael Benitez was also on the shortlist of the coaches the club were looking to bring.
“Rafael Benitez was on the shortlist for this Wydad job” – Rulani Mokwena said on SNAWA.
However, the club decided on going with him, and he is looking forward to leading the club back to the top of Moroccan and African football.

Meanwhile, the South African coach is still looking to build his technical team, as so far, he has confirmed former Mamelodi Sundowns Dstv Diski Challenge head coach Sinethemba Badela as his assistant.
