Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi reveals why the club released new Kaizer Chiefs signing Gaston Sirino.
Sirino was among the first batch of players to partways with Sundowns at the end of the 2023-2024 season alongside Bongani Zungu, Brian Mandela Onyango, Thabiso Kutumela, and Junior Mendieta.

The 33-year-old went on to join Sundowns’ arch-rivals, Chiefs on a two-year deal after six successful years at Chloorkop came to an end with the end of last season.
New Sundowns head coach, Mngqithi, revealed to Robert Marawa the reason behind the club’s decision to release the Uruguayan.
“To be honest, I like Gaston a lot, but in life, we must also allow for succession to take place,” said Mngqithi, in conversation with Robert Marawa.
“When you look at the players that we have signed, now we are trying to have Mabena also becoming a dominant feature in our team… Masek is becoming a dominant feature in our team. We’ve got Kutlwano, who is also doing very well. We’ve got Lesiba Nku, who is also doing well. We’ve got Kodisang, and we’ve got Lucas Ribeiro in these wide channels.
“I think the players we have signed are going to maybe prove whether it was a wrong decision for the club to let him go or it was the right decision, but let’s just wait and see.”
The Brazilians have since signed Kobamelo Kodisang from Moreirense on a five-year deal to replace the Chiefs attacker.
