Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, has shared the reasoning behind the club’s decision to grant veteran attacking midfielder Themba Zwane a one-year contract extension.
Zwane’s previous contract with the club had ended at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season.

Following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Polokwane City, Mngqithi addressed the media, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards for seasoned players like Zwane, popularly known as “Mshishi.”

The coach explained that the decision was aimed at motivating Zwane to remain sharp and committed.
“I think it’s the right thing to do, and everybody has the right to make his opinion heard, but I think it’s the right thing to do,” Mngqithi stated during the post-match interview.
He further elaborated, saying, “For players at that age, it’s important to keep them on their toes. We don’t think it necessarily means he will be out of the club after one year. But for him to stay sharp, it’s important he knows he has to fight for the next match.”
Mngqithi suggested that adopting similar short-term contracts for senior players across the Premier Soccer League (PSL) could benefit South African football overall.
He pointed out that many older players seek longer contracts as they approach retirement but emphasise the need for consistent performance.
“I think if all PSL clubs can adopt, it will be the best thing we can do for our football,” Mngqithi said.
“Because most of the senior players they want to get four-year contracts because they know they are looking for retirement and you want them to perform every week.”
Mngqithi expressed confidence in Zwane’s professionalism and work ethic, believing that the midfielder will rise to the challenge.
“He will work very hard, he will know we can not sit on his laurels, he has to give it his best shot, and I am very confident he will do well,” he concluded.
The match itself saw Sundowns secure a 1-0 victory at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, with the decisive goal coming in the 101st minute through an own goal by Polokwane City defender Thabang Matuludi.
Looking ahead, Sundowns will face Stellenbosch FC in a two-legged semifinal, with the first match scheduled to be played at home.
In the other semifinal, defending champions Orlando Pirates will travel to Cape Town to take on Cape Town City FC.
The Premier Soccer League is yet to confirm the dates and venues for these upcoming matches.
