Orlando Pirates secured their spot in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League with a dominant 4-0 win over Disciples FC at Orlando Stadium on Friday evening.
After a goalless draw in the first leg in Mauritius, Pirates faced some pressure to deliver a strong performance for their home fans, and they rose to the occasion.
The Buccaneers took the lead in the ninth minute, thanks to an own goal from Disciples FC, following a relentless onslaught from the home side.
Relebohile Mofokeng doubled the advantage in the 25th minute with a brilliant solo effort, weaving through the Malagasy champions’ defense before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
This goal set the tone for a series of attacks from Pirates, with goalkeeper Sipho Chaine having little to do other than keep possession with his defenders.
The highlight of the match came when Patrick Maswanganyi, wearing the iconic number 10 shirt reserved for continental competitions at Pirates, added a stunning third goal from outside the box.
After a weak clearance attempt by Disciples FC, Maswanganyi picked up the ball just outside the area and smashed it into the top corner, sending the Orlando Stadium crowd into a frenzy.
Maswanganyi was substituted at halftime, with Makhehleni Makhaula coming on in his place. In the second half, Pirates maintained their grip on the game, controlling possession and easing into the next round without taking unnecessary risks.
The final blow to Disciples FC came in the third minute of injury time when Karim Kimvuidi sealed the 4-0 victory with a late goal, ensuring the Happy People ended the night in celebration.
Despite the convincing win, there were some controversial moments, as the referees disallowed an astonishing four goals from Pirates for offside.
Nevertheless, Pirates will now turn their attention to the next round, where they will face the winner of the tie between Jwaneng Galaxy and Namibian Premier League champions African Stars.
