The Cape Town Spurs case against Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu FC at the Premier Soccer League Dispute Resolution Committee appears to have reached a conclusion.

Chiefs and AmaZulu
Reported new Kaizer Chiefs signings Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman during a 2024-2025 Motsepe Foundation Championship match at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

After getting relegated to the third tier of South African football, Spurs players Asanele Velebayi, Luke Baartman, and Liam Bern joined both Chiefs and AmaZulu on free transfers.

This comes as a consequence to NSL rule book stating that once a club is relegated to the amateur leagues, players automatically become free agents.

However, Spurs’ hierarchy led by CEO Alexi Efstathiou sees things differently, as the club states that the trio is still contracted to the club, and they were tricked into signing deals at Amakhosi and Usuthu.

Demanding fees for the players, the Urban Warriors has taken both clubs to the PSL DRC to demand that the players return to the club and fees being paid for them if they were to leave.

After nearly two weeks, the panel that is made up of former players like Mathew Booth, Siboniso Gaxa, and PSL Prosecuter, Zola Majavu, appears to have reached a solution to the matter.

All parties involved in the dispute are expected to hear the verdict on Thursday, the 31st of July, with many predicting that it will go Chiefs and AmaZulu way due to NSL rule.

However, should Spurs lose the dispute, they are likely to walk away with R4.5 million from the dispute.

FIFA requires clubs to pay R1.5 million to the clubs that developed the players when you are signing the players on a free transfer.
