Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Thembinkosi Lorch played a role in Rulani Mokwena parting ways with the club at the end of the 2023-2024 season.

The exit of the tactician took South African football fraternity by shock, as the club had an average season to their high standards.
He won the league for the seventh time in a row, lost in the final of both the Nedbank Cup and MTN8, lost in the semifinals of the CAF Champions League, and also lost in the first round of the Carling Knockout Cup.

While the 37-year-old has been hesitant to reveal what led to his departure at Chloorkop due to a Non-Disclosure Agreement(NDA) he signed upon leaving, his legendary uncle Dr. Jomo Sono spilled the beans on why he left during an interview on the Marawa Sport Worldwide show.
While they have been rumours of Mokwena having a fallout with Sundowns’ Sporting Director, Flemming Berg, Sono has confirmed that the two were not agreeing on the signing of Lorch.
“He discussed it with me. The big chief there, eh! The White man, what’s his name? – (Berg?) Yeah, yeah! He didn’t want Lorch because he felt that Lorch was over age. You can’t invest so much money in a player who is over 30,” Sono said on MSW.
“And then I said to him,” Look, I can’t get involved in the Sundowns politics.
“It is difficult to advice you on this one, I don’t want to get involved. Themoment I open my mouth, it will be on the back, in the middle and front pages.
“I don’t want to be involved. It is your decision. If you want him, you fight for him. If you want something, you fight for it. If you don’t want it, you don’t fight for it.”
