Confederation of African Football(CAF) is said to be in conversation to remove the Away Goal Rule ahead of the Federation’s 2024-2025 inter-club competitions.

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane in tears after losing the 2022-2023 CAF Champions League semifinal to Wydad Athletic Club due to the away goal rule after the match ended 2-2 on the day and on aggregate.

For much part of its knockout stage football in the inter-club competitions, the federation has been using the away goal rule as one of the ways to determine a winner in two-legged knockout matches.

With the Union of European Football Association(UEFA) doing away with the rule towards the beginning of last season, CAF is likely to follow in scratching the rule off.

According to one of the leading journalists in African football fraternity, Micky Jnr, the federation is internally discussing to follow in the footsteps of UEFA and do away with the law in both the Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions ahead of the 2024-2025 season.

“CAF is discussing internally to cancel the away goal rule in the upcoming Champions League and the Confederation Cup games,” Micky Jnr stated on X.
