In their first pre-season friendly match, Mamelodi Sundowns experienced a 2-1 defeat against German third division side SV Sandhausen 1916.

This game marked the team’s first outing since the departure of head coach Rulani Mokwena.
The match began with a tentative first 30 minutes, as both teams found it difficult to create clear-cut chances.

The play was characterized by frequent ball switches and minimal threats on goal. However, the encounter started to spark before halftime.
Sandhausen hit the post with a powerful header after 21 minutes, signaling their intent.
The German side eventually broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Tim Maciejewski capitalized on a defensive lapse from Sundowns, scoring following a corner that the South African team’s defense failed to clear.
Sundowns fought back after the break and found an equalizer through Tashreeq Matthews. The goal came after a swift and dynamic attack, showcasing the team’s potential in offensive play.
Despite their efforts, Sundowns’ defence was once again exposed. Sandhausen’s Dominic Baumann restored their lead, making it 2-1 after another corner.
This highlighted the defensive frailties that the DStv Premiership champions will need to address moving forward.
This match was the first of five friendlies that Sundowns will play in Austria. Their next challenge comes quickly, as they are set to face the 19-time Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday.
The pre-season tour presents an opportunity for the team to iron out any issues and build cohesion ahead of the upcoming season.
