The football community found itself at odds following questionable calls in games involving Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Soccerzone Breakdown With Victor Hlungwani

On SABC Sport’s Soccerzone, hosted by Andile Ncube alongside Simphiwe Dludlu and Hlompho Kekana, Hlungwani dissected the incidents

Cape Town Spurs vs. Sundowns Incidents

The first incident reviewed was the Cape Town Spurs and Sundowns match at Athlone Stadium, where a penalty awarded to Sundowns was the center of debate.

The Penalty Controversy

Hlungwani maintained that the penalty that led to Sundowns’ victory was incorrect, insisting that a freekick should have been given instead.

He feels the serious foul Asanele Velebayi was outside the box, and Peter Shalulile should have never been awarded the spotkick.

Spurs vs. Mvala Incident

In another incident in the same match, Hlungwani stood by his previous statements regarding a tackle by Mothobi Mvala on Ashley Cupido, supporting the decision not to award a penalty.

He feels Mvala got to the ball first and was the one fouled, as Cupido kicked him instead of the ball.

Amazulu FC vs. Orlando Pirates

The final incident involved a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal match between Amazulu FC and Orlando Pirates, where a penalty awarded to Pirates was heavily scrutinized.

Late in the first half, Pirates middlefielder Makhehlene Makhaula went down in the box after a challenge from Taariq Fielies.

After what appeared to be a soft touch, the referee awarded the spot much to the shock of Usuthu coach Pablo Franco Martin.

Hlongwane went against the referee’s decision and said the penalty should have not be given as the touch was not strong enough.

Disputed Penalty Decision: Victor Hlungwani vs. Soccerzone Crew

Despite the referee’s decision, Hlungwani argued that the contact was insufficient for a penalty, a stance not shared by Ncube and Kekana, who supported the referee’s call.

Hlungwani’s firm belief is that the touch did not warrant a penalty, and thus, the decision was incorrect.
