Fundiswa Nokuphiwa Mathithibala, the ex-girlfriend of Orlando Pirates football player Thembinkosi Lorch, has alleged that she endured two instances of assault before she finally sought legal recourse.
These revelations came to light during a victim impact statement presented in the Randburg magistrate’s court, where Lorch awaits sentencing for his assault conviction.
Thembinkosi Lorch And Fundiswa Mathithibala’s Relationship
Mathithibala disclosed that their relationship began in 2018 when they decided to move in together.

She was renting a two-bedroom apartment in Ferndale, Randburg, while Lorch resided in Vorna Valley in Midrand.
Their initial plan was for Lorch to move into her place, as she had more furniture.
They shared the rent equally while waiting for Lorch to afford a house of his own.
Financial Involvement
In October 2019, Lorch purchased a townhouse in Midrand, partly financed by a loan of R150k from Mathithibala.
Their relationship seemed harmonious, and they even contemplated starting a family. However, trust issues and accusations of infidelity began to strain their relationship.
Escalation of Violence
The situation took a dark turn when Lorch started showing signs of trust issues and emotional instability.

He accused Mathithibala of cheating, leading to them sleeping in separate rooms.
Mathithibala felt threatened when Lorch sent her distressing text messages expressing a fear of self-harm.
The Assault
The breaking point came when Mathithibala visited Lorch and an argument escalated into violence.
Lorch accused her of cheating, physically pushed her, and violently pulled her by her natural hair.
Mathithibala’s cries for help were answered by Lorch’s friend, who intervened.
Lorch’s actions left Mathithibala traumatised and in need of assistance.
Non-Reported Incidents
Mathithibala admitted that she did not report the two previous assaults to protect Lorch’s job and reputation.

She believed that the earlier incidents were less severe than the latest assault, which compelled her to seek legal action.
Emotional and Mental Toll
The emotional and mental repercussions of the abusive relationship were profound. Mathithibala struggled to balance her life, work, and mental well-being.
Sleep disturbances, constant questioning of her victimization, and a traumatic association with her own hair became enduring challenges.
Thembinkosi Lorch’s Response
During the court proceedings, Lorch expressed a willingness to make amends and apologize to Mathithibala.
However, the legal process is ongoing, with the case postponed to November 21.
Club’s Response
Orlando Pirates, Lorch’s football club, took disciplinary action following his conviction. He was fined and ordered to attend anger management therapy, which he successfully completed.
