Mamelodi Sundowns began their campaign in the inaugural African Football League (AFL) with a convincing 2-0 victory over Petro de Luanda in Angola on Saturday.

The Brazilians scored two goals in the second half and defended well to secure three points in their opening match of the continental competition.

Sundowns break the deadlock through Allende

The first half was a cagey affair, as both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances.

Sundowns had more possession, but they found it hard to break down Petro’s compact defence.

The hosts, on the other hand, relied on counter-attacks and set-pieces, but they failed to test Ronwen Williams in the Sundowns goal.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 67th minute, when Marcelo Allende scored a stunning goal for Sundowns.

Maseko seals the win for Sundowns

Sundowns doubled their lead in the 80th minute, when Thapelo Maseko rounded Petro de Luanda goalkeeper after a deadly pass from Gaston Sirino.

Sundowns hold a strong advantage heading into the second leg next weekend at home.
