Reason Why Siyabonga Ngezana Was Benched

The decision to sideline Ngezana, as revealed by FCSB president George Becali, was attributed to the young defender’s tiredness.

The South African center-back had logged an impressive 180 minutes of play in two consecutive matches leading up to the Romanian Superliga game against Hermannstadt.

While player rotation is a common practice in modern football to manage fatigue and maintain peak performance, Ngezana’s omission came as a surprise, especially considering his stellar showing in the previous match.

Hindsight often brings clarity, and FCSB’s decision to rest Ngezana might be more understandable when we examine the result of the game.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw, with star striker Andrea Compagno stealing the spotlight as he walked away with the Man of the Match award.

One could argue that FCSB’s management, though it may have raised eyebrows initially, ultimately made a calculated decision in prioritising Ngezana’s long-term fitness and performance over a single game.

Ngezana’s absence from the starting lineup against Hermannstadt may have seemed unusual, but it could be viewed as part of a larger strategy to ensure the player’s availability for future fixtures.

Center-back Joyskim Dawa’s sending-off during the Hermannstadt clash only underscores the importance of having a fit and rested Ngezana in the squad.
