Orlando Pirates triggers an option to extend in the contract of the club’s star striker.

Orlando Pirates
Orlando Pirates players celebrate Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s strike against SuperSport United during Nedbank Cup quarterfinal clash between Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on the 8th of March 2025.

With the contractual issues with star attacker Monnapule Saleng in the spotlight of South African football fraternity, Pirates have moved swiftly in tying down one of the club’s star attackers, Tshegofatso Mabasa.

The 28-year-old joined the Buccaneers back in 2019 from now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic and has since gone on to become the club’s second all-time leading goalscorer behind the club’s legend Benedict Vilakazi.

Despite being the club’s top striker, Mabasa’s contract with the club was ending at the end of the current season before the club decided to trigger an option to extend it for further two seasons according to Soccer Laduma.

“As we speak now, his contract will run until June 2027. The club has already exercised the two years on his contract,” the publication reports.

“It’s not a direct extension or a new contract. They have now taken the option they had on the player, and that’s within their right to do so.

“His previous contract was coming to an end in June this year.”

The extension will see the South African international stay at Houghton until the end of June 2027.
