But try as they might, the stubborn Stellies’ defence stood firm and walked away with a 1-0 victory.

After the match, Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro commented on the loss to Supersport TV.

Speaking to Supersport TV after the match, Riveiro put the blame on the pitch for his side’s loss.

“Not difficult to explain, good rhythm from the start, and we took the initiative in a very poor field,” he told SuperSport TV.

“That means you are also taking risks, and in one of those situations, they punished us in a transition.

“From there, we tried to do everything to equalize.

“Little by little, the opponents defended deep, and that makes it difficult to find a simple advantage in the last minute we couldn’t manage.

“We lost. It’s the first game of the season, and we have to keep on going.

“Tomorrow, it’s minus two, and we are playing Tuesday again, and there is no time to waste.”

Pirates takes on Royal AM at home on Tuesday, the 8th of August, at Orlando Stadium.

The kick-off is set for 7h30 pm SA time, and the match will be live on Supersport PSL.
