Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi talking to the media after his side’s 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on the 8th of March 2025.

Amakhosi needed late strikes from Pule Mmodi and Mfundo Vilakazi to book their place in the semi-finals of Nedbank Cup.

Having taken the lead in the first half thanks to a penalty from Miguel Inácio Chiefs relinquished the late in the 86th minute after Andre De Jong headed in Sanele Barns’ corner to level the scoreline.

However, the talking point of the match came in 90+5th minutes, as initially Mmodi’s goal was chalked off by one of the linesman who felt that George Matlou infringed Stellies keeper Sage Stephens leading to goal.

Match official on the day Sikhumbuzo Gasa went to his assistant to discuss the incident before awarding the goal to the dismay of everyone in Stellies colours in the stadium.

Despite the controversial state of the victory, Nabi was pleased with victory and always believed his side would beat their hosts even after conceding an equalising goal late in the game.

“It’s true that everyone is very happy, the supporters all across South Africa, but we need to think like a big club, this was a test and we need to concentrate on the next test to go all the way,” Nabi stated after the victory.

““It was disappointing (to let in an equaliser), but we knew that we were playing a very strong and tough team.

“Even after conceding the goal, we kept believing that can come back, and we were prepared for extra time.

“That’s why we brought in Shabalala, Vilakazi, because we were planning for extra time, planning to give us that extra strength.”

Chiefs finds itself in the semis alongside their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates, who beat SuperSport United 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 2-2 after extra time.

While also extending their winning run to two games, having beaten Magesi FC 1-0 in the league heading to Stellies clash.
