Mamelodi Sundowns middlefielder Tebogo Mokoena beat Orlando Pirates attacker Monnapuleng Saleng to the PSL Footballer of the Season Award.
Nominated alongside another Sundowns player, Ronwen Williams, Saleng was the favourite to win the award given the season he had.
But Sundowns and Bafana Bafana middlefielder Tebogo Mokoena beat him to the award despite only winning one trophy this season.
The outcome left South African football fans in shock, as they didn’t expect the outcome after Pirates Nedbank Cup win.
The Pirates star’s 26 goal contribution in 30 games across all competitions put him above the rest in the country.
And his for this season saw him win the Nedbank Cup, MTN8, and finishing second in the Dstv Premiership.
The Sundowns star played 38 games across all competitions, scoring 2 and assisting 2 as well.
However, the Dstv Premiership coaches, as well as judging panel, voted Mokoena above Saleng despite only winning the league.
Sundowns was knocked out in the semifinals of the CAF Champions League and MTN8 and the quarterfinals of The Nedbank Cup.
Putting the awarding of Mokoena in question, as many feel, Saleng is the one that deserves the award.
