Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso provides an update on Matias Esquivel’s future amid uncertain times at Chloorkop.

Having joined the Brazilians back in January 2024 from Argentinean club Lanús for a reported staggering fee of R47 million, Esquivel’s future has always been up in the air at Chloorkop.
The 26-year-old has struggled for game time, leading to him being loaned out to his former club, CA Talleres, just over six months after joining Sundowns to only return six months later.
Upon his return this year in January, Esquivel was hopeful of getting his chance to prove himself, as Sundowns had a new coach in the helm.
But he suffered the same fate as the two coaches before Cardoso, as he found it hard to get a chance in the star-studded team.
With Cardoso and the club’s hierarchy trimming down the size of the club’s squad, the diminutive attacker is among players facing uncertainty at the club.
During the 2025-2026 Betway Premiership launch this past Tuesday, the Sundowns’ coach was asked about the player’s future.
In response, the Portuguese tactician acknowledged that the player hasn’t been given fair chances to prove himself, but the club is open to him leaving, and he also trusts him, as he is an important player for the club.
The Betway Premiership champions start the defence of the title they have won eight times in a row away to Chippa United this upcoming Saturday, with the kick-off of the match set for 3 pm Central African Time.
