Matthews’ impressive form in Sweden

Matthews, 23, is a former South African youth international who joined Borussia Dortmund as a teenager, but failed to make a breakthrough in Germany.

He then had stints with Utrecht U21, Helsingborgs IF and Varbergs in Europe before finding his feet with IK Sirius this season.

The versatile attacker has scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 26 appearances for the Swedish side, making him one of the most productive players in the league.

He has also shown his ability to play as a winger or a second striker, which could suit Kaizer Chiefs’ system.

Chiefs’ plan for the future

According to Soccer Laduma, Chiefs have been following Matthews’ progress and have a plan in place on how they could use him if he joins them.

The source said that Matthews would be the right player to take over from Dolly when he retires, as he would be able to learn from him and be groomed for that position.

Dolly, 28, joined Chiefs in July 2021 and had a stellar first season with 12 goal contributions in 26 games.

However, he has struggled with injuries since then and has only made one substitute appearance this season.

His contract expires at the end of the current campaign and his future is uncertain.

Chiefs are keen to bring more players in, as their sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has stated before.

They have already signed Tebogo Potsane, Pule Mmodi and George Matlou as attacking options, but they could still make a move for Matthews, who has more goal contributions than any South African player in the Bafana Bafana squad this season.
