Khama Billiat, one of the most decorated and talented players in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL), is facing an uncertain future as he remains clubless since leaving Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Zimbabwean international star has been unable to secure a move to any local or foreign club, despite being linked with several teams in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
According to sources close to the player, Billiat may consider retiring from professional football if he does not find a suitable offer soon.
Why Did Billiat Leave Kaizer Chiefs?
Billiat joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2018 from Mamelodi Sundowns, where he had won several trophies and individual awards, including the PSL Player of the Season and the CAF Champions League.
He signed a three-year contract with Amakhosi, with an option to extend for another year, which the club exercised and added another season to the original deal.
However, his stint at Naturena was marred by injuries, poor form, and lack of silverware.
He scored only 24 goals and 29 assits in 126 appearances for Chiefs, and his only major achievement was helping them reach the final of the CAF Champions League last season, where they lost 3-0 to Al Ahly.
Billiat’s contract with Chiefs expired at the end of June 2023, and the club offered him a one-year extension with a reduced salary, according to reports.
However, Billiat rejected the offer and went AWOL on the club, hoping to find a better deal elsewhere.
He reportedly hired a new agent to facilitate his move, but his high salary demands and injury history made him a risky proposition for potential suitors.
Which Clubs Were Interested in Billiat?
Billiat was linked with several clubs in different continents, but none of them materialized into a concrete offer.
Some of the clubs that were rumored to be interested in him were:
Zamalek (Egypt): The Egyptian giants were said to be keen on signing Billiat.
However, the club denied any contact with Billiat or his agent.
Cape Town City FC (South Africa): The PSL side was reportedly close to signing Billiat on a free transfer, as they were looking for an experienced and creative attacker.
However, the deal fell through due to Billiat’s wage demands and fitness concerns.
What Are Khama Billiat’s Options Now?
Billiat is currently training on his own in Johannesburg, hoping to keep fit and attract a club soon.
He has also not given up on playing abroad, but he would have to accept a lower-profile league or a short-term contract.
Alternatively, he may decide to hang up his boots and end his illustrious career, which saw him win 7 major trophies.
He is widely regarded as one of the best players ever to grace the PSL and Zimbabwean football.
