The recent loss of Luke Fleurs, a promising defender for the Amakhosi, has brought this issue to the forefront of national attention.

Keagan Dolly: The Impact of Violence on the Community

Dolly, who grew up in the gang-ridden suburb of Westbury, Johannesburg, and Fleurs, hailing from the equally troubled Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town, both knew the harsh realities of their neighborhoods.

“I don’t think we are safe any more,” Dolly expressed during Fleurs’ memorial at FNB Stadium.

He highlighted the constant fear and danger that loom over their communities, where young lives are frequently lost to gun violence.

Keagan Dolly Remembering Luke Fleurs

The bond between Dolly and Fleurs grew strong after the latter joined the Chiefs in October.

Dolly reminisced about their shared experiences and the void left by Fleurs’ untimely passing.

“Luke’s passing has been tough for me… we grew close,” Dolly shared, recalling their time together during training camps and daily interactions.

Honouring a Fallen Teammate

In a heartfelt decision, the Chiefs’ players chose to continue training and to face Chippa United in a DStv Premiership match as a tribute to Fleurs.

“We felt it was appropriate to go and play for his honour,” Dolly stated, acknowledging the difficult but unanimous choice to honor their late teammate.

A Lasting Legacy

In a poignant gesture, Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr confirmed that Fleurs was set to start in the lineup against Chippa, adding a layer of tragedy to the loss.

The team has decided to retire Fleurs’ jersey number 26, ensuring his memory and legacy will endure within the club.
