The father of Kaizer Chiefs starlet Mfundo Vilakazi reveals how the club nearly lost the player to Betway Premiership rivals, Sekhukhune United.

Vilakazi joined Amakhosi’s development ranks after he was released by now-defunct Bidvest Wits after the club was sold to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivandila back in 2020.
He quickly rose in the club’s junior ranks before becoming a part of the club’s reserve team in the Dstv Diski Challenge, but his journey wasn’t a smooth one.
As there was a time when the club was not impressed with his performances and wanted to return him to the club’s under-17 side, which his father, Sabelo Dlamini and the player himself where not happy with.

Leading to the youngster nearly joining Sekhukhune United on a six-year deal, as they were promising Vilakazi first-team football.
“It was difficult to get him to play for Chiefs. He told me that once Chiefs sign you, they focus on the players who live at the Naturena village,” Dlamini told Happy Dayz On Podcast.
“He told me that they were going to return him to the Under-17 team, and he did not want that. Sekhukhune was prepared to give him a first team contract.
“They were still new in the PSL, Willard Katsande was playing there, and they were prepared to give him a six-year contract.
“But based on reality, he was still a young boy but at the same time I did not want him to play for Chiefs’ Under-17 team and the reality is that I could not demand that he plays for Chiefs’ first team.”
Dlamini further went on to reveal that the then Chiefs reserve team head coach Arthur Zwane kept asking them to make sure that the youngster signs a contract with Chiefs to be able to play DDC football.
“Arthur Zwane was on my case, telling me I need to sign the contract so he could be part of the MDC.
“I knocked off late and when I got home, I had to beg him to sign for Chiefs, but he said no, he wanted to go to Sekhukhune because some of his friends signed for the team.
“All he wanted to do was play in the first team,” Dlamini concluded.
Vilakazi went on to sign the contract at Chiefs, and a few years later, he was given a lucrative first-team deal, which currently sees him as a crucial part of the first-team squad.
