Nedbank Cup Quarterfinal vs. AmaZuluÂ
After two easy victories, Pirates faced a fellow Dstv Premiership side, AmaZulu FC, in the quarterfinals of the cup competition.
Usuthu hit the front in the controversial match through former Kaizer Chiefs middlefielder, Hendrick Ekstein 30 minutes into the match.
But the match went into the break all-square after Maswanganyi beat Veli Mothwa from the spot.
The visitors took the lead 12 minutes after the break from Kabelo Dlamini’s free kick before Taariq Fielies equalised for the hosts.

Semifinal vs. Chippa UnitedÂ
The victory against AmaZulu set up a semifinal date against Chippa United away from home.
In what was Dlamini’s show, Pirates beat the Chilli Boys 3-1 thanks to double from Dlamini and Xoki’s late strike, while Chippa’s solo goal came from Elmo Kambidu in the 63rd minute.
Final vs. Mamelodi Sundowns
After brushing aside Chippa United, Mamelodi Sundowns was the final step for Pirates to defend their Nedbank Cup title.
Pirates started the match under pressure, as Sundowns got a controversial penalty in the sixth minute from the referee, Skhumbuzo Gasa.
Deon Hotto was deemed to have fouled Khuliso Mudau, but Sipho Chaine denied Lucas Ribeiro Costa from the spot.
The match went into the break all-square with Sundowns dominating the most of the half and continued to threaten Pirates’ defence in the early second half.
Themba Zwane tapped in Rebeiro’s cross early in the second to give Sundowns the lead, which was cancelled by Maswanganyi.
Like Sundowns in the first half, Pirates received a controversial penalty after Aubrey Modiba was deemed to have fouled Maswanganyi in the box.
The middlefielder dusted himself up and sent Ronwen Williams the wrong way to level the scoreline.
With the match seemingly headed for the extra-time, 19-year-old starlet Mofokeng twisted Bongani Zungu in Sundowns’ defence before toe-poking the ball past Williams to hand Pirates the victory and the title for the second year running.
