Grant Kekana, Sipho Mbule, and Khuliso Mudau celebrate Cassius Mailula’s goal during the 2022/2023 Dstv Premiership season.

Tefu Mashamaite thinks that Cassius Mailula’s move to Toronto FC in the United States has affected his chances of playing for the South African national team.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns Star’s Move to MLS

Mailula, 22, transferred to Toronto FC in 2023 after a successful season with Sundowns, where he scored 15 goals in 31 matches in all competitions.

He also impressed the South African national team coach, Hugo Broos, who gave him his first cap in 2022.

However, Mailula has not played much in the Major League Soccer (MLS), making only three appearances for his club so far.

This has resulted in his exclusion from the national squad, who are currently participating in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Mailula’s Opportunity For AFCON

Mashamaite, who played for Chiefs from 2008 to 2015, believes that Mailula should seek a loan move to either Chiefs or Sundowns to improve his chances of being selected for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2024.

He said that Mailula has missed out on a lot since his move to the MLS, which is now in its off-season

“You know it’s off season now, and it would be good if he can be loaned out,” Mashamaite told Soccer Laduma.

“Whether it’s Kaizer Chiefs or Mamelodi Sundowns , that would really come handy for him.

“The loan deal can open up the window for the national team coach to look at him.

“You know, with AFCON around the corner, it could be good if he ccouldseal that deal before the Africa Cup of Nations so that he could be part of that squad.

“You know , ince he moved to America, he moved into obscurity and lost his place in the national team.

“He used to be part of the national team, but since moving there, he has never been called up.

“So , for his progress, fitness, and form, I feel a loan move to one of the two teams would be good for him.”
