Former Kaizer Chiefs star faces arrest for assault after attacking match official.

What happened?

One of Kaizer Chiefs’ former stars, Luke Petros, is in trouble after punching a referee in the nose at the end of a soccer match in Zimbabwe.

 Petros, who is now the coach of Tenax FC, was unhappy with the referee’s decision to not award his team a late penalty in a goalless draw against Grayham FC.

The incident happened on Saturday, October 16, 2023, at Chiremba Stadium in the Eastern Region Soccer League.

Petros and five of his players attacked the referee, Blessing Tauro, and his two assistants after the final whistle.

The match officials had to be rescued by the police and local residents, who took them to Ruwa police station.

What are the consequences?

Petros and his players are facing arrest and disciplinary action for their violent behaviour.

The referee reported the matter to the police, who opened a docket against them.

The Eastern Region Soccer League chairman, Davison Muchena, also condemned the incident and said that Petros and his players would be summoned for a hearing as soon as possible.

Muchena said that he was shocked by Petros’ actions, as he had a lot of respect for him as a former Warriors and Chiefs striker.

He said that he did not expect such kind of incidents in the Eastern Region Soccer League, which does not tolerate violence in its games.
