Orlando Pirates legend Ephraim Jomo Sono and Kaizer Chiefs legend Theodore Douglas Doctor Khumalo are some of the players that have their jerseys retired while they are still alive.
The two legendary South African football stars have given the country and it’s football lovers their identity with their displays during their playing days.
With both clubs struggling to produce players of their calibre their jersey numbers 10 and 15 have not been used in domestic football since they retired.
While Sono’s jersey was used by Steve Lekoeloea for a brief period of time, Khumalo’s number at Chiefs has never been used since he retired.

After years of the jersey not being used, Amakhosi management is said to have asked permission to use it.
But Mdunga is rumoured to have turned down their request due to not believing anyone is worth it.
According to Rushsporton sources, the club’s request to ask Khumalo to hand the jersey number to either Mduduzi Mdantsane, Mduduzi Shabalala, or Daniel Edson Castillo was turned down.
Due to Khumalo feeling, no one is worth the jersey, as the person who is worthy of the jersey is not born yet.
Meanwhile, the club’s communications manager, Vina Maphosa, has addressed the issue of the fans attacking the club’s head coach, Molefi Ntseki.
He said the club understands the fans’ frustrations, but they condone any sort of violence.
They are doing all they can do to return the glory days to Naturena. All they are pleading for is time and patience.
The club’s next match is against Amazulu FC at FNB Stadium this upcoming Saturday, the 26 of August 2023.
The match will kick off at 5h30 pm and will aired live on Dstv Channel 202(Supersport PSL) for South African viewers.
