FC Barca coach Xavi Hernadez compared 15-year-old attacker Lamine Yamal to his former teammate Lionel Messi after making his La Liga debut this past Saturday against Real Betis.
The La Masia product came off the bench to replace another La Masia product Gavi in the 80th minute, to become Barca’s youngest debutant in the top tier of the Spanish football league.
Despite his tender age, the youngster’s cameo appearance convinced Xavi that the youngster is ready to become the next Lionel Messi or Ansu Fati.
As his touches and display on the night saw him nearly walk away with a goal and an assist, but due to the brilliance of Real Betis goalkeeper Rui Silva and the indecisiveness of Ousmane Dembele, he had to settle for an impressive outing without a goal or an assist.
Xavi continued to sing the praises of Yamal after Barca thumped 10 men Betis side 4-0 to extend their lead at the top of the table to 11 points over their arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Former Spain international believes that Yamal has enough talent to do what Messi has done for the club, and even go beyond the legendary Argentinian captain.
Yamal will be looking to continue his good start with the senior team later today, as Barca is set to face ninth-placed CA Osasuna at Spotify Camp Nou in Catalunya, Barcelona.
