Orlando Pirates announced that the club head coach Jose Riveiro will leave the club when his contract ends at the end of the season.

Jose Riveiro
Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi during a media briefing at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg during the 2024-2025 season.

After a successful stint that saw the Spaniard tactician leading the Buccaneers to five trophies in two-and-a-half seasons, the Sea Robbers will have a new head coach next season.

With the club’s dugout set to have a new man, here are some of the names that the club could look to bring in.

Five Coaches Tipped To Replace Jose Riveiro

1. Pitso Mosimane

Jingles, who is currently clubless after parting ways with Iranian club Esteghlal earlier this season, has been linked with the Buccaneers since the turn of the year.

Pitso Mosimane

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly SC tactician would bring a wealth of experience that includes three CAF Champions League titles and multiple league honours in multiple countries.

2. Rulani Mokwena

The former Pirates and Sundowns head coach is currently under pressure at the Casablanca-based club, Wydad Athletic Club, having joined the club at the beginning of the current season.

His future at the club is expected to be made after the FIFA Club World Cup in June, and as it stands, he is likely to be shown the exit doors should the club’s inconsistent run continue.

3. Mandla Ncikazi

The Pirates assistant coach is likely to be handed the head coach job, having been at the club for more than four years.

He joined the club back in 2021 from Golden Arrows and served as the club’s co-coach with Fadlu Davids for the 2021-2022 season before being demoted to being an assistant a season later.

The 56-year-old tactician is seen as the man to take over Riveiro, given that he is already part of the club’s tactical team.

4. Miguel Gamondi

Gamondi has experience of South African football, having won the league with Sundowns back in the season 2004/2005.

The former Young Africans SC head coach will bring a wealth of experience to Pirates should he join the club having coached more than five clubs in Africa.

5. Manqoba Mngqithi

His successful time at Sundowns also puts him in the picture to take over Riveiro at Houghton.

He is currently on a short-term deal at Arrows, and indications are that he will stay beyond the current deal, but should Pirates go for him, he might leave Arrows when his current deal ends.
