Kaizer Chiefs middlefielder and captain Yusuf Maart’s captaincy under scrutiny as the club’s struggles continue.

The former Orlando Pirates middlefielder was appointed the club’s captain ahead of the 2024-2025 season after the club’s Itumeleng Khune parted ways with the club at the end of the previous season.

However, his captaincy has been met with criticism and scepticism from fans, pundits, and almost everyone related to the club.
Among the personalities doubting Maart’s abilities as the club’s captain is former Chiefs striker cum-defender Patrick Mayo.
Speaking to FarPost, the father of CR Belouizdad forward, Khanyisa Mayo, believes that the former Sekhukhune United doesn’t have the mentality to lead Amakhosi.
“For me, Yusuf Maart is not mentally strong to be a captain. Look at the calibre of captains that have been at Chiefs in the past,” Mayo told the publication.
“There were the likes of Patrick Mabhedi, Cyril Nzama, and Itumeleng Khune; the list goes on. They had strong characters on and off the field. Maart is not at that level.”
Mayo also went on to display his displeasure in Yusuf Maart’s performance on the field of play and how he is not made to be the club’s captain.
“As a captain, you should be consistent in your performances. With Maart, he can give you a good performance, then next game, he’s quiet,” Mayo continued.
“I think some people don’t have leadership qualities in their blood.
